SAN FRANCISCO UNICORNS APPOINT CAMERON WHITE AS HEAD COACH
Proven leader and ex-Australia international promoted and given year-round remit to guide Unicorns to success in fourth Major League Cricket season
The San Francisco Unicorns today announced the appointment of Cameron White to the role of Head Coach, rising from his previous position as Assistant Coach.
The former batting all-rounder, who represented Australia in all three formats and captained them in both T20 and ODI formats, while also being the youngest ever Australian to captain their state, was part of the Unicorns’ setup during the 2025 Major League Cricket (MLC) season. In his capacity as Assistant Coach, White earned plaudits for his tactical acumen and commitment to developing domestic talent in training environments. White succeeds his countryman Shane Watson, who led the Unicorns through their first three seasons.
Alongside his existing commitments as Head Coach to BBL side Melbourne Renegades, White will play a new, year-round, hands-on role with the Unicorns’ franchise in preparation for the 2026 MLC season, taking the lead on performance decisions, underpinned by the team’s proprietary data-led approach, for the league’s fourth edition long before players arrive for camp.
The decision to appoint from within the current coaching staff demonstrates the firm belief of co-owners Anand Rajaraman and Venky Harinarayan that the team has strong foundations in place. That belief is underpinned by back-to-back playoff runs, achieved through smart domestic and international player acquisitions in recent years, as well as the elite off-the-field standards that White has been pivotal in establishing.
Cameron White, San Francisco Unicorns’ Head Coach, said of his new role: “Working with the Unicorns last season, I’ve seen first-hand the potential for this franchise to not only grow within MLC, but become a globally-recognized brand around the world.
“As Head Coach, this will be very much an evolution, rather than a revolution. I’m confident of the elite performance culture in and around the team that’s been cemented under Shane’s time in charge, and Anand and Venky’s ongoing commitment. What will change is my year-round input into team development and scouting activities, and I hope this more holistic, data-led approach will put us in a strong position to bring success to the Unicorns in the coming years.”
Anand Rajaraman, co-owner of San Francisco Unicorns, added: “The past couple of years have seen two playoff runs for the Unicorns, including one to the final, and we strongly believe that our data-driven approach, executed by world-class cricketing expertise, is the key to bringing consistent success to the Bay Area.
“We’ve been hugely impressed by Cam’s knowledge base, attitude, and buy-in to the Unicorns. This year-round, more integrated appointment as Head Coach will allow him to execute on his cricketing philosophies more comprehensively, and working alongside an already established back-office and performance setup, our first championship title is one step closer.”
White is tasked with returning the team, which features the likes of acclaimed T20 internationals Matt Short and Finn Allen, to the Major League Cricket Final, where they last appeared in 2024 under Shane Watson’s leadership. The appointment will also cement the franchise’s relationship with Cricket Victoria, which has helped shape much of the team’s domestic and Australian talent development since the team was formed.
