The San Francisco Unicorns has recruited South African international all-rounder Wiaan Mulder for the first two matches of the 2024 MLC season, adding cover for Pat Cummins, who will join up with the squad later in July.

Mulder, 26, brings strong multi-format experience to the Unicorns roster, with eight senior international T20 appearances under his belt, as well as 15 test matches and 12 ODIs for his native South Africa.

The all-rounder joins The Unicorns in a rich vein of form in 2024, having starred for Leicestershire Foxes in England’s Big Bash League and the Lions in South Africa’s CSA T20 Challenge, where he helped the team to the championship with a crucial half-century in the final.

He will contribute valuable medium pace variation to the Unicorns’ bowling attack which already features internationals in pacemen Haris Rauf and Matt Henry, as well as an exciting batting style that has seen him average 27.64 across his domestic T20 career.

Pat Cummins will play his first match for The Unicorns in the teams’ third match of the MLC season against the LA Knight Riders, following a period of rest and workload management agreed with Cricket Australia.

“The opportunity to play in Major League Cricket with the Unicorns was one I simply couldn’t turn down. The team is packed full of talent from one to eleven, and I hope to show the fans and viewers around the world what I can offer with bat and ball for the first couple of matches,” added Mulder.

“Filling in for Pat Cummins is never an easy task, but I’m joining on the back of a successful 2024 T20 season, and I hope to bring that momentum and form to the Unicorns and help them however I can with the aim of bringing home the championship to San Francisco.”

The Unicorns’ 2024 roster features explosive batters Finn Allen and Matt Short, recent USA T20 World Cup hero and club captain Corey Anderson, and express bowlers Haris Rauf and Matt Henry. For the second successive season, the Unicorns will be coached by two-time Indian Premier League (IPL) Player of the Season Shane Watson.

The 2024 Major League Cricket season commences on July 5, with San Francisco Unicorn’s first match coming on July 7, when they take on the LA Knight Riders at Grand Prairie Stadium, in Grand Prairie, TX.
